Objective: The “Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood” was designed to enhance maternal healthcare services in some of the major regional hospitals in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana that lack essential and modern equipment for their operations. By integrating data analytics and innovative technologies, the project aimed to optimize the allocation and utilization of maternal equipment.
The primary goal was to ensure that essential maternal health equipment such as ultrasounds machines, delivery beds among others were strategically distributed based on data-driven insights. The data collection involved analysing birth rates, maternal health records, and historical usage patterns of maternity equipment in various hospitals within the targeted region.
Approach: By integrating data analytics and innovative technologies, the project optimized the allocation and utilization of maternal equipment, ensuring safer childbirth experiences for mothers and newborns.
Outcomes: Improved Disaster Response and Crisis Preparedness:
During the unforeseen surges in maternal healthcare demand, the data- driven system allowed for immediate identification of hospital (Tema General Hospital) facing shortages in maternity equipment. Rapid response such as emergency dispatch and temporary resource reallocation, were facilitated. This timely intervention significantly improved the hospitals’ preparedness during sudden spikes in birth rates, ensuring that the expectant mothers received proper care even in crisis situations.
Enhanced Healthcare Services and Reduced Maternal Mortality Rates:
The data-driven approach identified hospitals with high maternal mortality rates and limited access to essential equipment. By strategically supplying advanced maternity equipment to the Tema General Hospital, the project significantly improved the quality of maternal healthcare services. Foetal monitors, for instance, enabled early detection of complications, leading to timely interventions and reduced maternal mortality rates.
Community Empowerment and Inclusivity
The project facilitated community engagement by providing accessible data on maternal healthcare services. Community members were informed about the availability of advanced maternity equipment, promoting trust in the healthcare system. Moreover, data transparency encouraged community participation in health awareness campaigns. Below is a link to show donations made by the organisation to the hospital
